Carmel House Paint Transformation

This full-property interior and exterior repaint was a collaboration between TMM Painting and Aaron James Design. The house, named Carmel, was defined by one clear goal: refresh every surface to significantly increase brightness, unify spaces, and deliver a finish built specifically to perform in coastal humidity and salt-air conditions.

Instead of treating white as a default colour, the repaint was planned as a comprehensive coating system—where sealing render, choosing flexible acrylics, priming steel correctly, and controlling door sheen were all critical to maximise light quality and longevity.

Coating Systems by Surface: The Dover White Strategy

The consistency of the Dover White aesthetic across varied substrates (render, steel, timber) was achieved by customising the coating system for each material’s specific needs, ensuring both technical performance and visual unity.

Exterior Render (House & Garage Walls)

System: 1 x Dulux Green Render Sealer, followed by 2 x AcraTex Acrashield Advance Matt
Product Type: Water-based, breathable, mould-resistant, and flexible façade coating designed for long-term render protection.

Rendered Fence Walls

System: 1 xRender Sealer, followed by 2 x Dulux Weathershield Matt
Product Type: Water-based exterior acrylic, chosen for washability, flexibility, and resistance to micro-cracking often seen in fence lines.

Eaves & Fascias

System: 2 x Dulux Weathershield Matt
Product Type: Water-based exterior acrylic with a low sheen to effectively reduce roller flashing under harsh raking light.

Colorbond Steel Fence

System: 1 x Dulux Precision Adhesion Primer (Solvent-based), followed by 2 x Dulux Weathershield Matt
Primer Focus: Maximum adhesion and corrosion grip for the steel substrate, ensuring a flexible coastal protection barrier.

Front Entry Door & Garage Back Doors

System: 1 x Dulux Undercoat, followed by 2 x Dulux Aquaenamel Low Gloss
Product Focus: Water-based, hard-drying enamel that delivers a soft low sheen, making it highly touch-resistant while reflecting clean, controlled light.

The Transformation: Key Improvements Delivered at Carmel

The biggest shift delivered to Carmel was how light works and moves within the space. The intentional application of the Dover White system transformed the home from a standard property into a unified, light-maximising design asset.

Key Aesthetic and Structural Changes:

Light Quality: Light now travels farther into hallways and corners, dramatically increasing perceived space.
Visual Unity: Every surface (render, steel, doors) reads as a single, unified brightness system, eliminating colour or sheen conflicts.
Protection: Steel fencing and rendered areas are correctly primed and sealed for long-term salt and humidity exposure, mitigating coastal wear.
Durability: Doors reflect cleanly without excessive glossy shine, thanks to the controlled sheen of the Aquaenamel system, ensuring they remain protected and touch-resistant.
